Berea College Promise Neighborhood

Modeled on the acclaimed Harlem Children’s Zone, the purpose of the Berea College Promise Neighborhood is to significantly improve the educational and developmental outcomes of children and youth in three of Kentucky’s poorest and most distressed counties (Clay, Jackson and Owsley).

The initiative sets in place a complete continuum of cradle-through-college-to-career solutions with a range of family and community supports, and great schools at the center.   The project seeks to transform the area by coordinating improvements across multiple sectors, with education as the primary focus.  The vision of the Berea College Promise Neighborhood is that all children and youth growing up in the Neighborhood will have access to great schools and strong systems of support that will prepare them to attain an excellent education and successfully transition to college and a career.

In order to learn about the overall impact of the Berea College Promise Neighborhood program and about the relationships between particular strategies and outcomes, Berea College has contracted with REACH Evaluation to provide a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation, and to develop a customized longitudinal data system that integrates student information from multiple sources.

The ‘promise’ of the Berea College Promise Neighborhood is truly great  –  to transform neighborhoods of concentrated poverty into neighborhoods of opportunity.  The potential to truly revitalize Kentucky communities in need, and create long-lasting social betterment, is of interest to many.
